Step into Your Greatness

A recent trip to a museum in Spain reminded me how important it is to let go of time if you want to step into your greatness. And, let me tell you, this isĀ  a difficult admission for a “timeaholic” like me.

I took a day trip outside Barcelona to see the work of surrealist painter, Salvadore Dali, in Figueres. I was especially struck by one of his most famous symbols – the face of a curvy, elongated clock. In his paintings this clock can be found flying through the air, stretched over a closed eyelid, covered with ants or missing its numbers entirely.

He was depicting something I often write about: the fluidity of time. It can seem longer or shorter – in spite of the precise ticking of a Swiss clock, time is not rigid.

Dali shows it this way: the closed eyelid is said to represent the sexual act when all sense of time is lost. There are no numbers left on the clock when we are dead, as we have no more time. Yet, the ants on the clock face represent the anxiety that is associated with time when we are alive.

Here’s how I think about it: each of us has a true talent – something we were put on Earth to do. When we are expressing it, we step outside time and space. We can be working for two minutes or two hours and it seems the same to us. We lose track of time when we are “doing what we are meant to do.” To quote my Mother, “Time flies when you are having fun.”

If you are constantly monitoring and managing your time, you’ll limit the ability of your special gift to come through. In your effort to control, your creativity will be stifled, and you’ll do what you think you should, as opposed to allowing your true talent to emerge. The expectation of security that comes from controlling time actually limits your potential.

In a society that reveres the masculine energy of control, this isn’t an easy step. It takes the feminine energy of internal self-awareness to feel where your energy comes from. And, it takes commitment to give it space to grow and expand.

The benefits of letting go of time are significant. You’ll feel more of yourself. Standing tall in your power you’ll become a bigger, fuller human being and you’ll step into your greatness. Anybody know what time it is?
