If you saw my interview on Indie Style TV last week, then you know my Mom was a major influence in my love for shopping, fashion and style. Here is a clip from that episode:

Yes, it is true, my Mom toted us from store to store, perusing and examining our possible purchases. She carefully checked over stitching, seams, lining, fabric texture and content. As a smart shopper, she compared quality to the price she was about pay. I think that is when I learned “you get what you pay for.” I still touch and examine every garment as I shop today.
Keeping my closet neat and tidy, along with cleaning my room and the litter box, was a weekly chore growing up. Seasonally, we spent a weekend reorganizing my mom’s closets and wardrobes. Constructing the idea that seasonally maintaining your closet helps you see what you have, what you aren’t wearing and what you may need to pass along. Additionally, it creates room for more goodies.

The most important thing I learned is that I can do and be anything I want. Mom constantly told us this growing up… and really still does today. No matter what it was, we could do it and she would be absolutely proud of us. Believe me, I have had many jobs, and she has been supportive for each and every one of them.

As a wardrobe stylist, traveling and meeting all kinds of interesting people, she is always excited for me, but keeps me grounded.

Thank you Mom for imparting your natural style, unconditional support and love.

I love you.

I was shopping with a private client and she made a statement to me that surprised me…

Shopping for clothes scare me.

That stuck with me for several days, so I asked her try to expand on her statement.
Here is what she said…

“I would assume many women feel clothes shopping is scary… more so when we no longer look the way we did… clothes don’t fit the same as when we were teenagers.

Also [many] stay-at-home moms who let themselves go, feeling comfortable in sweats, fleece and easy to clean T-shirts… don’t like to stand in front of the three-way mirror and see who we have become.

Moms who have young kids along when they go shopping for clothes don’t have the time or energy to keep looking for more clothes if the initial ones they take into the dressing room don’t fit.

Most women over 30 don’t look good in the skin tight, tissue thin super long T-shirts that seem to be everywhere. Or we don’t know how to properly layer sweaters or jackets over such shirts.”

Because I CANNOT speak from experience, I enlisted my sister, Heather, for insight.
“I found because I was a different person after I became a mother, I could also remake myself in terms of my personal style. It was hard at first because building a new wardrobe takes time. That is what many women have to do after having children, build almost an entirely new wardrobe. Rob, for five years I had everything from a four to an eighteen in my closet as I became pregnant, gave birth, regained my body, then started it all over again. Most of my old favorites were long stretched out and now out of date.

It is both financially and physically daunting to think of rebuilding a wardrobe. I think it helps if moms can find a go-to store or website that fits their body type. I love J. Jill but can’t wear a thing. I also love Banana [Republic] and primarily shop from their outlet. Everything there fits me, always in the same size, I know the offerings are in-style and I won’t spend hours in the dressing room trying to find the correct size. Also, I always know what I am looking for before I go shopping. Gone are the days of window-shopping to ponder the latest offerings for the season! You have met your nephews!!!! Actually spent a lot of good time with them this year!! I have asked you for a must-have list and perused In Style magazine before I ever think of heading to the store. Each season I have a short list of things now to add to the wardrobe I have built over the last several years.

Another bit of trivia you may not know, many women’s feet grow a half or full size during pregnancy, never to return to their original size. My shoe wardrobe was decimated after having my boys!

Things that helped me during this time of transitions:
Concentrating on what I could control. I didn’t always have enough money to go buy every new item of clothing I wanted, but I could control what I put into my mouth and how often I exercised.

The jogging stroller and I were good friends. The double jogger and I were good friends. And today Caleb ran two miles with me while Blake biked with us. I can control how much I move, even if the resulting body does not look the same as it did when I was nineteen.

Loving the amazing body that had made my children. Sure, my stomach looked like a jet puffed marshmallow on and off for three years, but my body carried, and nourished, and delivered two amazing babies. Even when I didn’t like to look in the mirror I could find joy in the marvelous blessing of my body.

Getting one really great go-to outfit each season. I found as long as I knew I had something I looked great in, even if my friends had seen it ten times, I could be confident during this transitional time.”

My final thoughts:
Mothers sacrifice all their comforts and will work ceaselessly in the home without expecting anything, only to take care of their children. These sacrifices result in rewards of euphoria when a mother finds her children happy and healthy. As the children are beginning to achieve some independence, Mom may realize the woman in the mirror is unrecognizable and her constant outpouring of energy into her family has left her drained and possibly couch-ridden.

It is time to rediscover, reinvent, and get reacquainted with yourself. Accepting the good, bad, and ugly. It is all a part of life and the evolution. Reinvention’s path is individualized and will be a different experience for each. By acknowledging the things you remember about who you were and addressing the things you find you don’t like about yourself now, create the pathway to reinvention. What I find is that many mothers have forgotten they are beautiful and vibrant women.

If you follow my Facebook and Instagram entries you will note my enjoyment of food. I like to say I am a Wardrobe Stylist during the week and a Foodie by weekend. But let’s ignore the calories for a moment and take a different approach to what we enjoy. Let’s be inspired by our favorite desserts. Translate the heavenly flavors into rich colors and combinations. See what my colleague Angie Cox of youlookfab.com has to say about Gelato.
ENJOY!!I am so enjoying rich combinations of orange, coral and tomato red paired with their tonal mid-tone and pastel companions like peach, nude, blush and apricot. The colours remind me of my favourite flavours of yummy gelato – sweet, refreshing and cool. I have yet to put this palette into practice for my own style, but it has been popular with my clients this season.

When creating a tonal ensemble with these colours, I like to choose one bright or mid-toned clothing item per outfit, and keep the rest of the clothing items in lighter shades of the same (or similar) hue.

For the footwear and handbag, you have two options. Either use light neutrals like tans, off-white, cream, beige, taupe, gold, caramel, pewter, mushroom tones, light grey or silver. Or use tonal shades of the clothing items.

The items above actually create quite a nice mix-and-match capsule in this colour palette. That’s because some of the bright items work well together, like the tomato red blouse and the coral skirt. And although they are both in lighter shades, the apricot jeans and the light blush blouse work well together too. These lower contrast ensembles are great, but right now I find the ensemble stronger when it creates a contrast like I have done in the picture above.

I’ve kept the pieces solid, but feel free to create the same effect with tonal patterns and textures. Add in jewelry and accessories as desired. And treat yourself to some gelato!

When creative forces respect one another’s mind, they begin a relationship of talents. That fusion if used correctly has the ability to create magical worlds and invoke the treasures of your imagination to flow from your mind freely. The fearless epiphany of becoming one with your own thoughts. Successfully working as a team, we have begun a project. Nay, we have commenced a lifestyle movement.

Fashion in motion is what we have affectionately dubbed this series. taking the talents of the fashion industry and developing concepts all while keeping our love for this glorious empire state afloat.

Guys, these Spring-Summer trends involve stepping outside of your comfort zone a little; but fear not, for we will build on pieces you should have in your closet already. The only real rule I stick to, with few exceptions, is “no white until Easter.” I know it’s a bit old fashioned, but a little structure goes a long way, especially if you are questioning where and what event, no mater how casual you are attending.

Polished
Slick and sleek looks, neutrals, and monochromatic that are not sterile, but stunning. Using tones with other tones, along with added textures shows skill. This impressive look is clean and commanding.

Brights
Rock Technicolor shades on everything, from lean cropped suiting, to shoes. You can snap yourself out of a somber day by donning a brilliantly chipper hue. Think of it as either a “flush” (all one color), or straight (two color combination). Have fun with reds, pinks, oranges, and even turquoise.

Refined Plaids
Dandyish plaids, including leather strapping, elbow patches and retro trimmings add instant class and dapperness. We are not talking about banjo plaid, but more of a London plaid. This includes large scale in soft shades and playful tones of a polo game.

Urban Safari
Think concrete jungle: updated safari pieces will make your neutrals go wild. You may just think animal print, but it’s really a bit more sophisticated. Add neutral textures to create depth and sophistication.

Leisure & Freedom
The best for last: take two or three of the ingredients above, and blend generously. Think of your favorite smoothie, latte or mixed beverage: too much of one ingredient will make the drink too much to stand. It is a balance; play with it and see where yours is.

“For the Prada Spring/Summer 2012 lookbook Real Fantasies, AMO OMA explores the nostalgia of hot rodding, golfing, picnicking, the space race and other wholesome past times [of the 1960's]“

The 1960′s period fuels the inspiration of the collection. The mod color palette, iconic GM inspired tail fin and headlamps repeated in prints, embellishments and sculptures, on the post of each heel, create a time warp of past and present. The “motion book” from Prada coupled with the funky music enhances the “hyper reality” of the collection. Enjoy.

A mild winter, unseasonably warm days, and with spring break underway, visions of beaches, waves, and swimwear dance through our heads. But for many of us, the latter also has a tendency to become a nightmare.

When choosing swimwear, we should refer to our body shape rules, also paying attention to color and patterns. If you favor patterns, you should remember that attention would be drawn to that particular area. As with stripes, horizontal stripes look well on boyish figures only. Higher Lycra content suits, darker colors and smaller patterns as opposed to large floral prints, are generally slenderizing.
Hourglass Shape
Vintage trends are fantastic at accentuating your curves. These styles bring in the waist to play to your hourglass shape. Halter-necks, cupped and bandeau tops are especially designed to pull everything up, and emphasize your curves.

Pear Shape
You typically are small-busted with fuller hips; use ruffles to your advantage by adding volume at the top half. Your bust will appear visually larger. You can also use vintage cupped styles with padding as well to create curves. Prints would also be great on top, with solid, deeper shades on bottom.

Apple Shape
Using ruffles to your advantage by conversely adding them to the bottom to balance your hips with your bust. Unstructured crochets or string bikinis don’t offer any support; instead seek out more structured styles and halter-necks. Lengthening your bodies’ appearance is the objective, pair a printed bikini top with a block-colored bottom, drawing the attention upwards. Avoid “boy-cut” bottoms and go for high cut thighs instead so as to not shorten the legs further.

Rectangular Shape
If you’re not big on the curves, but have a strong physique, make the most of styles like statement strapping, backless styles and crochet that instead show off that athletic bod. You can select both one or two-piece suits; detailing around the waist will help create a more hourglass appearance. Try a wrap-style top or a belted bathing suit bottom to create the desired definition.

Don’t be in a hurry while shopping for your perfect combination, it will only end in frustration and a some sort of cover up. Go prepared and have fun, the right swimsuit is waiting for you!!!
